I absolutely love working with metal, and I am so very excited about returning to the gorgeous Hacienda Mosaico. If you’ve never been, you are in for the experience of a lifetime...look at the pictures & imagine 5 days of art making in this beautiful, lush setting! During this week long retreat in paradise, I will be teaching some of my favorite techniques for altering metal, and applying these skills to three different mixed media projects. These techniques will become treasured favorites that can easily be applied to your own art work. You will receive in depth instruction on many aspects of working with metal, including:

Monday - Faux Etching, Surface Design on Metal
We will start off our journey by creating a series of quirky little figurative assemblages using my faux etching technique. This etching technique evolved from a happy accident, ever since I have been having a blast etching every scrap of metal that I can get my hands on!
You will learn a quick & easy process for creating “etched” metal surfaces without having to deal with toxic, harmful chemicals & hours of agitation. After etching the metal in the morning, we will spend the rest of the day constructing the figures. We will also cover basic cold connection methods as well as composition & design. You will create at least 1 figurative sculpture, 2 or more if you work fast.

Tuesday - Birds Gone Wild
Today we will be creating the wackiest flock of birds you’ve ever seen! Not quite sure what to do with the mounds of junk....oops...I mean, treasures that have been accumulating in your studio? Have you been afraid to use that vintage tin, saving it for the “perfect” project?
Well dig it all up, bring it with you!
You will learn a variety of assemblage & composition skills, how to connect metal pieces without glue, and how to grind & soften sharp edges. Most of all, learn how to let go of perfection, let loose & have a blast!
You will create at least 3 unique, one of a kind birds. (the birds that you make in class can be any size, depending on the metal that you bring. Most of mine are around 8” x 5”).

Wednesday -
We will spend the first half of the day exploring and practicing your favorite techniques, putting final touches on the first 2 projects, asking questions & playing. The rest of the day will be spent junking or exploring beautiful Puerto Vallarta. With Sams ‘guidance, we can decide as a group what wonderful places we’d like to explore.

Thursday & Friday - Beyond The Vintage Metal Deck
On the final 2 days, we will transform ordinary metal into a fabulous thick, chunky, beautifully embellished deck of cards. Each student will receive10 flat pieces of metal, each 6 X 3 inches, to transform into a beautiful work of art. We will explore a variety of ways to use & distress metal, cloth, paper, found objects, and you will learn a boatload of brand new ideas & techniques!
You will leave with a unique, beautifully embellished art deck that can be bound by decorative wire or transformed into a book or sculpture if you wish.

All cancellations are subject to a 20% handling fee.
Reservations cancelled prior to 90 days, 50% is refundable.
Less than 60 days, 25% is refundable.
